Can the qubits’ own varying decay rate produce the X-gate residual?

Simulated qubits with perfect X gates (zero gate cost), whose decay rate varies from shot to shot and persists through each circuit, with the spread set from the independently measured share of non-exponential decay, run through the exact estimator used on the hardware, give a slope per gate of −0.00177 (real: −0.00136 mean over nine runs). A qubit that survives the first wait is more likely a slow one; the estimator cannot see that. So the residual does not require a gate cost. With the decay shape held equal (22 October), an extra X gate costs 0.0001643 [0.00005906, 0.0002695] combined over fez, kingston, marrakesh and phoenix, and on fez and kingston the residual is opposite in sign to that cost and at least twice its upper edge, so it is not a gate cost there; no extra-gate test exists on boston or pittsburgh (deciding runs). sim_gate_nonexp.py · results
